A light-hearted look at the myths, misinformation, and the misconceptions of people with disabilities.

Type of Presentation: Keynote or Workshop
Length of Session: 45 - 90 minutes

"I know I'm disabled... You know I'm disabled... But it often seems like you don't know that I know I'm disabled. And you don't want to be the one to tell me, in case I look down at myself and scream, "OH NO! YOU'RE RIGHT!"!"

EMPLOYMENT EQUITY

Being Realistic Isn't Realistic: Jumping Out of the Benevolence Trap

Norman Kunc was born with cerebral palsy. In his teen-age and early adult years, Norman was often encouraged to “Be Realistic” and set goals within bounds of his physical limitations.  Norman politely ignored this well-intentioned advice.  Instead, he integrated himself into a regular school, completed a Master of Science program in Family Therapy, built a successful career as an educational and motivational speaker, and, in his spare time, races his sailboat off the coast of Vancouver Island.  He has achieved all this though an unwavering belief in possibility and innovation.

In a fast-paced, entertaining presentation, Norman applies his experience and insights to the area of employing people with disabilities.  He maintains that we often not only under-estimate the potential of disabled people, but we also overlook novel and rewarding ways that disabled people can become valued employees and contributing citizens.  Norman gives the audience a crash course in “Being Unrealistic,” and gives employers some practical tips on how to move beyond well-intentioned but limiting assumptions.
