Disability Coaching

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM DISABILITY LIFE-COACHING?

Disability Coaching can benefit a wide range of people who are dealing with issues related to a physical or cognitive disability.
These include:

  • Parents of children or adults with physical or cognitive disability
  • Caregivers of individuals with disabilities
  • Teenagers or adults with physical or mental disabilities
  • Aging individuals who find that new physical limitations are restricting their recreational or daily living activities

In disability coaching, the agenda is yours.  My job is to provide you with the safe, confidential, and supportive space to intentionally work on improving that area of your life.

For example, if you’re a parent of an infant or toddler with a disability, we might discuss how you can better balance the rehabilitative needs of your child with all the other demands of your daily life.

If you’re a parent of a school age child, we might explore how your child could be included in a regular classroom, or we might loojk at options to help your child make friends and get more connected to the social network of your community.

If you’re a parent of an adult with a disability, we might talk about the various supported independent living options.   I know of some families who have been able to use the disability allowance as collateral for a mortgage and bought their son or daughter a home.  A roommate pays minimal rent but provides personal support.

In the same way, if you’re a teenager or adult with a disability, we might discuss how you can start dating  or finding a relationship.  You might want to work on finding a job or even starting your own business.  You may want to explore the possibility of moving into your own apartment and living more independently.

If aging has brought new limitations, we can look at ways of adapting your life so you still enjoy the things you like to do and be as self-reliant as possible.

It important to note that a cognitive disability doesn’t preclude a person from using and benefitting from life-coaching.  All of us need the time to intentionally explore their our dreams and to creatively brainstorm ways of achieving our goals.  For a person with a severe disability, family members, friends, and care-givers may want to set up a conference call where we work together on improving an area of the person’s life.

There are limitless options when we take the time to deliberately explore what might be possible.
